A New York-based company is beta-testing robots that can lay bricks and may be coming to a jobsite near you. The semi-autonomous mason machine, or SAM, is being watched closely by construction and robotics professionals alike. “At a full sprint, SAM can lay bricks at speeds comparable to a mason,” says Scott Peters, vice president at Construction Robotics. “But there’s the issue of worker fatigue—they take breaks. So, in a day, a mason can do about 400 to 500 bricks. But now you can have the mason minding the machine, and it can do 1,400 to 1,500 bricks a day.”  And while construction sites aren’t robot-friendly, engineers say their experiments are continuing as they try and bring automation to the industry.

How can you manage risk in industrial construction projects? While there’s no way to avoid accidents, pre-construction and financial threats are two of the areas that should be evaluated before a job begins. “We recommend managing risk in four stages – identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring,” says Tricia Corcuera of DRAXware Solutions, a construction management software company. “These four strategies comprise the core of the process of risk management and can help minimize cost overruns, keep projects on-time, deliver exceptional project performance, prevent finger pointing, and protect the relationship between contractor and owner.” Corcuera adds that organizations that decide to “wing it” rarely experience positive outcomes.

There are strong opinions whether companies should reveal details of their CEOs compensation, stock options, and other perks. Reuters reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is sharply divided on the matter. “With CEOs of many U.S. companies earning hundreds of times more than their workers, unions and labor advocates are championing the SEC’s CEO pay-ratio rule,” writes journalist Sarah Lynch. “They say disclosures would help investors identify top-heavy compensation models.” But the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business groups oppose the measure, claiming it will be of little use to investors.
