A new study finds that Hispanics will account for 40 percent of employment growth over the next five years. HIS, an economic forecasting company, says the Hispanic labor-force growth is set to accelerate by an average 2.6 percent over the next 20 years, even as the entire country’s labor force will grow by 0.6 percent from 2020 to 2034.  Voice of America says many of those job gains are likely to be in construction, health services, leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Hispanic share of U.S. employment will increase to 23 percent over the next two decades, from 16 percent last year, according to the research.

Job gains are widespread but still spotty. New research from the Associated General Contractors of America finds that construction employment gains have spread to more than two-thirds of the nation’s metro areas. Peppering the good news with cautious optimism, Ken Simonson, chief economist for the association, says there is growing risk that contractors in many regions will struggle to find qualified workers to complete the rising volume of projects. According to MDM.com, Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas added the largest number of construction jobs in the past year (13,500 jobs), followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, CA (10,100 jobs). Areas that sustained losses include Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ and Bethesda-Rockville-Frederick, Maryland.

New research from McGraw Hill Construction finds that educators are committed to environmentally friendly building. The New & Retrofit Green Schools study indicates social benefits, such as improved health and productivity, are critical drivers for the education sector. A post on Construction.com also states these factors are equally as important as financial drivers. “Over 75 percent of respondents consider improving indoor air quality and enhancing health and well-being as key drivers, which is nearly the same percentage that cite financial benefits, such as lower operating costs and reduced energy use,” explains Harvey Bernstein, vice president, Industry Insights and Alliances for McGraw-Hill Construction. He adds that green building will benefit the next generation of construction industry professionals. “They will learn practices that will become embedded into the design and construction of all buildings in the future,” Bernstein says.

Questions and answers make up most of our everyday dialogues and conversations.

More often than not, we tend to hastily react to a question, a habit that can create a number of misunderstandings.

Good communicators and managers don’t speak in haste. They are deliberate in their thoughts and words. They respond, they don’t react.

When people take just a moment to respond to questions, they engage others on a deeper level.

In his book Fire in the Heart, author Deepak Chopra says that reactions are knee-jerk and come automatically while responses take some thought. Most of the time, we go through our days reacting to people and situations.

Here is one of Chopra’s examples. You’re ordering lunch in a restaurant and the server asks, “Which of our specials would you like, a salad or a hamburger?”

An immediate reaction would be to choose one item.

But a response goes deeper. “Does the hamburger come with cheese? Are French Fries included?”

Most reactions could easily turn into responses, if we took a split second to pause.

The habit of responding does not take much effort or time but it does require awareness.

As Chopra points out, many people opt for the reaction simply because it’s the first thing that pops their heads. It doesn’t require much brain activity.

The key is that something new will happen when we give ourselves room to think.

One technique that can help you move from reaction to response mode is “P-R-R. Pause, Reflect, and Respond.”

When we allow ourselves just a few seconds to think rather than blurt out a quick answer, our minds and mouths slow down. This can also shift the dynamic of a conversation. Slowing down in our communication can be a good thing.

Try to go through a 24-hour period using the Pause-Reflect-Respond approach.

You’ll be surprised that one or two seconds can make a real difference in your interpersonal communication.

“Our biggest challenge today is finding an adequate work force,” explains Al Landes, the newly sworn-in president of the Associated General Contractors of America. “We’ve lost a lot of vocational training. We need all the trades. We’ve got to reintroduce them.” The organization, which leads efforts in setting professional standards for the U.S. construction industry, has a $17 million budget. Landes says the group’s strong focus on lobbying will continue during his one-year-term. Landes is the president and chief operating officer of Herzog Contracting Corporation in Missouri.

March is Women’s History Month, but according to several new studies, gender biases in the workplace still exist. “The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show how an unconscious bias in ‘hiring managers’ can influence them to choose men over women, even when women perform equally well or better on tests, and speak honestly about their skills,” writes Anthony Rivas on MedicalDaily.com. “The researchers found that these stereotypes, and subsequent hiring practices, held true when the ‘hiring managers’ were both men and women.” Rivas notes the findings have widespread implications in the science, tech, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
